Design and Features
The K60 has a two-toned color scheme with a bare brushed aluminum deck studded with black plastic keycaps, similar to its Editors’-Choice-winning sibling, the Corsair Vengeance K90 ($129.99 direct, 4.5 stars). The plastic caps are made of black plastic, and use Cherry MX Red mechanical switches?the same used on top keyboards like the Vengeance K90 and the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate ($129.99 direct, 4.5 stars)?for all of the typing keys and the numeric pad, but uses cheaper silicone dome switches under the lesser-used function keys. There’s also no backlight, so gaming in low light may leave you in the dark, so to speak.
On the keyboard itself, you’ll find a few extra controls for media, like buttons for stop, play/pause, forward and back search, as well as a rolling volume control and mute button. A Windows lock key turns off any pesky functions that might interfere with your gameplay, and a USB pass through lets you plug in a mouse or flash drive without having to snake a cable behind your tower. A durable braided USB cable gives you six feet of length, and two USB connections. A braided cable sheathing prevents tangling, while reinforced plugs and cable connections will stave off any of the wear and tear that plagues cheaper keyboards.
Two features found on the K60 that the Corsair K90 lacked, however, are the unique one-handed wrist rest and switchable keycaps. The wrist rest gives you an ergonomic boost to your gaming, shaped with a comfortable thumb rest and positioned to put the WASD keys directly under your fingertips. Enhancing this further is the inclusion of 10 switchable keycaps, letting you swap the standard black keys for bright red, textured keys, sculpted to make navigating in games even more comfortable.
The wrist rest actually functions as storage for the swappable keys, opening up to hold the unused set and storing the included key removal tool. The molded keycaps also have a pattern of raised triangles texturing the surface of the keys, providing some traction, but also helping you recognize the keys by feel. The same textured pattern covers the space bar, which is not switchable.
The only issue we can claim is that the swappable gaming keys are almost too specialized. The number keys have no secondary characters shown on them, making it a bit of a blind hunt to find the correct keys for some symbols. The WASD keys are also perfect for maneuvering in an FPS game, but terrible for typing. If your PC use switches between leisure time gaming and daytime productivity, it can be a hassle to constantly swap out key-sets.
It’s not just the molded keys and mechanical switches that make this a solid gaming keyboard, however. Anti-ghosting lets you press any number of keys simultaneously, while 20 key rollover with a 1ms response rate keeps up with your typing no matter how fast your fingers fly. We tested the keyboard in daily use and in the throes of pitched battle, and it served us well in every instance.
Corsair’s Vengeance line of gaming peripherals has proven itself to be both well made and perfectly suited to gamers’ unique needs. The Corsair Vengeance K60 differs a bit from the Editors’ Choice Vengeance K90?with less comfortable keys, no backlight, and no programmable functions?but it’s still a unique offering that should satisfy anyone who picks one up.

Inquiring minds are reading an excellent report?China Real Estate Unravels?by Patrick Chovanec, a professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management in Beijing, China.
The report confirms many of the things I said would happen in regards to the Chinese real estate bubble and GDP.
Here are a few items of note.
Developers, burdened by 70% leverage ratios and loans threatening to come due, rushed to complete projects already in their pipeline, to put those units onto the market and raise cash.
That rush to complete inflated real estate investments, allegedly up 23.5% in the first quarter. Other statistics from the report tell the real story.
- Year-on-year sales in Q1, for all real estate, was down 14.6%.
- Residential property sales were down 17.5%
- Office sales were down -10.2%?
- Sales in January-February were a disaster, falling 20.9% overall, compared to the first two months of 2011, -24.7% for residential.
- Total amount of floor space ?for sale? was up 35.5%, compared to the same date last year
- Floor space of residential units ?for sale? grew 47.4%.
- At the end of 2011, total floor space ?under construction? was roughly 4.6 times the floor space sold
- A year and a half worth of excess inventory is hidden somewhere in the pipeline
- New starts in April fell 14.6% year-on-year and 27.0% month-on-month, for property as a whole
- Housing starts fell -14.4% year-on-year and -23.4% month-on-month
- Office starts fell -21.0% year-on-year in April, and -45.1% compared to March
- Retail property starts fell -18.7% year-on-year, and -36.8% compared to March
- Land sale revenues in April (RMB 27 billion) were down -54.7% compared to April last year
- Foreign funding for property development was down -91.4% in March and -80.8% in April, compared to the same months last year.
Clearly a crash is underway. The above stats also show the soft-landing thesis is written on toilet paper.
GDP Analysis
I like the analysis by Chovanec on GDP implications and the highly-overrated “soft landing” theory.
?The ?resilient? growth in real estate investment that seemed to promise a ?soft landing? is not very resilient at all. It?s more like the last gasp of a market that?s running out of steam. Once the surge in completions plays out, the declining number of new starts will?become?the pipeline, and growth in property investment will flatten or go negative.
Property investment accounts for roughly a quarter of gross Fixed Asset Investment (FAI), and net FAI accounts for over half of China?s GDP growth. As I?noted in January, in a back-of-the-envelope thought exercise, if property investment plateaus (growth falls to zero), it could shave as much as 2.6 percentage points off of real GDP growth.?If it fell 10%?(in real, not nominal terms) it could bring GDP growth down to 5.3%.
At the time I first saw this dynamic in the data, when the Q1 numbers came out, I figured it would take several months to begin playing out. But the April numbers suggest it is already happening.
Chovanec notes if real estate investment drops by 10%, GDP will come in at 5.3%. What if real estate investment falls by 20% or 25%? Moreover, why shouldn’t it?
Nails in the Hard Landing Coffin?

?The longer China puts off rebalancing its economy, the bigger the crash later on. Moreover, widening the band on its currency is a needed part of that rebalancing, and does not preclude in any way a huge slowdown in growth.
The structural imbalances in China are large and for now, still growing. However, huge cracks have appeared in real estate, and changes are coming up with a regime change. Finally, peak oil alone makes many of the growth estimates we have seen for China outright impossible.

Protecting national grids is easier said than done, so how will the companies approach it?
McAfee has teamed up with its parent company Intel to launch an initiative that aims to protect the world’s energy utility ecosystem from cyber attacks.
The companies say they will team up to create a blueprint for a series of products that will form a multi-layered approach to energy utility security. The protection will cover the generation, transmission and distribution of energy, the companies said.
The companies will also be creating what they call a “reference implementation,” which essentially is a mock-up of a critical infrastructure environment with McAfee’s security products installed and can offer a simulation of what happens during an unsuccessful cyber attack.
An “improperly configured” – meaning one without McAfee’s products installed – can also be simulated to show what happens during a successful attack.
However while this may make the process of securing critical energy infrastructure look simple, McAfee and Intel admit that it will be a very difficult task to achieve.
The companies say network diversity, data overload and complex endpoint management make this a difficult task. Simply adding security products designed for the enterprise environment to an energy infrastructure will not work.
Along with this we can add the fact that many assets used in power grids predate the internet. This makes them particularly vulnerable to cyber attacks and means they are unable to identify or report malicious activity up the network chain, McAfee said.
“To adequately secure critical systems against cyber attacks, the right products and technologies must be integrated into the entire infrastructure — from the enterprise, to the SCADA and control systems, and even to the automated device networks — without impacting reliability or interfering with operations,” Eric Knapp, critical infrastructure expert at McAfee.
“McAfee, together with Intel, has combined commercially-available chipset capabilities and cyber security products into the perfect recipe for substation security, providing advanced protection while removing operational complexity, and improving reliability through remote manageability,” he added.
Security experts have previously warned energy companies and governments that critical infrastructure cyber attacks will increase over the next few years. James Lyne of Sophos told CBR recently that the potential impact on a successful cyber attack being launched against a country’s national infrastructure was, “serious” and that, “we will see more over the next year because control systems have not grown as IT security has over the last 20 years, so there are security holes.”
Kaspersky founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky also told CBR that attacks on critical infrastructure are a real possibility.
“The critical infrastructure is not well protected and can be the victim of a sophisticated attack. My message is that we have to inspect national and global security infrastructure, we have to inspect power plants, airports and so on to find the weak points and introduce military standards of security for the critical elements of national and global infrastructure. It’s time for that,” he told us.
Intel acquired McAfee in a surprise move in August 2010, for $7.7bn.
